Latest Vintage Obsession 1940s-1950s Nightgowns and Sleepwear

Lately I have been quit obsessed with nightwear of the by gone eras. I think it might be the fact that I've been home more often I keep on continually getting sick I get rid of one bug and then get the next. But oh well that's what happens when you have a weak immune system. Now back to the topic I enjoy seeing these gowns, bed jackets,and slips I just love the detail they would put into these lovely garments. Now here are some scans I got from a few of the magazines my great aunt gave me.

So here is the last part of the Junior series

the teens of today that love the by gone eras.

Junior Styling 1950's

During the post war era  the term "teenager" came out. The post war was a consumer boom  for teens so there wardrobes had  more things than  in the 1940s.

Teen girls  in the fifties wore dress and skirts more than anything in there wardrobe. They were not allowed to wear pant to school or shorts. Although there were those girls that didn't care much for the rules cough cough, *my great aunt*. They were vary strict on how long there dresses were as well my art teacher went to school during the late fifties and was telling me the other day that they would measure there skirt to see how long it was  and would make sure it was at least mid knee length couldn't be any shorter.  There wardrobe had a variety of things. They wore blouses,cardigans,and sweaters to match there bottom. They also had skirts which were usually plated or a circle skirt to be worn with a petticoat or a fitted skirt a line skirt. They had playsuits,pants,dungarees, and shorts also that they would were also they were mostly used as causal wear to be around the house later in the 50s they wore them a bit more often out of the house though. They undergarments for teens were a slip, maybe petticoat, and shape wear they started to wear it at around 14-15.  As for dresses there were so many sundresses,day dresses,evening dress and party dresses.  Now shoes were loafers, flats, ballet slippers, saddle shoes, and a low heel. This is pretty much sums up the 50s and there is one last part of this small series but it a surprise I hope you enjoyed part 2.

                                                    Today's post is based on the teen style of the 40s during the time 

 “juniors” meant a particular size range and style  that went to a  specific

age-group, it began in 1930s of course junior is still a size range  today but it began being a known style  range during the 30s and 40s.

Teenage girls often had spectators or saddle shoes, and a pair of sandals or wedges to wear in the summer (By wedge I mean pretty low heeled) Girls would try to stick to one main color scheme throughout their wardrobe to stick to sporty separates (with only a few dresses) to stretch their wardrobes further since it only made sense with rationing in effect.Sweaters were a main detail in the wardrobe they could be pullovers or cardigans, and generally cardigans had pretty buttons (like faux-pearls or glass beads) or embroidery on them. This is more post war, but then fair-isle, and even like Kooky patterns were also popular.A line skirts, made of wool in a bright color or a plaid for winter and fall, and then breezier ones for spring and summer.  As for undergarments teens wore girdles and stockings,and slips. During this time period There wasn’t much a distinction between women and teenagers, except that teenagers could choose to dress slightly less formally (depending on just how old they are) if they wished.

Blog of the Month - The Rockabilly Socialite

Hello, everyone I apologize for not blogging lately but I started school once again

and have been dealing with getting use to all the new classes.

Now I'm back !! So the past interviews I had done had a great turn out

so I decided instead of just blog of the month what if I do a kind of blog of the month

interview to not only talk about how much I enjoy there blog but so everyone can see

why the blogger has such a great blog!! So this month the august

Blogger of the month winner and her birthday just passed Mrs. Dollie Deville from

The Rockabilly Socialite. Her wardrobe and home are a dream!! See for yourself in the interview!!

1.Do you have a style icon? If so do tell!!

My style icon is, and forever will be, Betty Grable. Whether on-screen or off, she always looked polished from head to toe. She also wasn’t afraid to show off what god blessed her with-her amazing legs- and I admire that. While Betty could be the utmost of glamour and class, she still had an easy going, girl next door vibe that other Hollywood starlets of the time didn’t. In my opinion, she truly was the American sweetheart! I credit her role in The Pinup Girl for starting my obsession with novelty print playsuits, especially in yellow, as she wore a few in that role.

I also like the style of Jayne Mansfield. I love that Jayne knew how to use her curves to her advantage. As the original sweater girl, I credit her with my love obsession of tight skirts and tighter sweaters! We also share the same favorite color: pink! Besides her figure, I also admire her for her brains. She was very smart, but that never got to shine though because people only cared about her looks. I know as a blogger I feel that way sometimes too.

2. What do you like best about yourself?

Looks wise or personality wise?

Well, personality wise I like to think that I am witty and funny, but not everyone seems to think so. I like jokes involving a play on words, and they normally go over everyone’s head. That’s what I like about my fiancé, he has a great sense of humor. We are constantly going back and forth with jokes.

Looks wise, I have to say my smile. I feel that it is my most underrated feature. I always get compliments on my eyes and hair, but never my smile. I had horribly crooked teeth growing up and was teased for it. Eventually I stopped smiling all together and covered my mouth with my hand when I did laugh or smile. In high school I got braces and had them for 3 painful years. So when I finally got them off I was so happy that I haven’t stopped smiling since! Whenever I model the photographer tries to make me do sexy pout-y lip faces and I always hate them. I always prefer pictures when I am smiling big! I always think of Marilyn Monroe in that case. She was told to always wear an innocent smile because you never want to put “sexy on sexy”, it was just too much to have a sexy expression and figure.  I live by that rule to this day!

3. At the moment what is your favorite singer/band??

This is the hardest question! Music plays a huge role in my life, so it is hard to pick only one. At the moment, I would have to say JD McPherson. I got his record at Viva Las Vegas last year and fell in love instantly. He is playing at Viva Las Vegas this year so I listen to his record and watch his live performances online to get pumped up for next year. If anyone wants more info on him and his music, I did a CD review on his album and posted some videos of him.

4. Name a blog your fond of.

A lot! Yours is just one! But, today I will just talk about Lilvintagehomemaker.blogspot.com. I wish I could be as great of a Lil Vintage Homemaker as Reagan is! She is a fantastic sewer and baker! Check her blog out!

5.What fascinates you the most from the past eras??

How well things were made! From clothing to house wares, things were just made better. I believe the companies took more pride in their products and built things to last. Now-a-days corners are cut and things are made as cheaply as possible and it shows. Now when you buy modern clothing from monster department stores the seams are cut so tightly they are ripping apart all the time, the thread is thin and breaks, and the buttons always fall off! And forget washing those things. The minute you do it’s done for! But 50+ years later we are still wearing vintage! The fabric back then was just made better, the colors are stronger, and the buttons were sewed on for dear life! The same with house wares. Our 1954 GE fridge is still chugging away, day after day, but our brand new microwave only lasted a few months before it pooped out! So I will gladly pay for an old American made product over a new Chinese made product any day!

6. What was your first vintage piece??

You always remember your first, don’t you? I was 18, and up to that point I was only wearing reproduction, but I knew I wanted to get into vintage collecting. My first real vintage piece was a blue and white circle skirt sun dress that buttoned down the front with the prettiest blue buttons. I found it on ebay and wanted it for my first ever Viva Las Vegas car show. I got into a bidding war with someone in Japan and in retrospect, spent way too much on it. I wore it to the car show with the biggest blue crinoline you have ever seen! I loved it! It changed my life forever and now I am hooked. I still have that dress and still love it!

 

7.What is your favorite way to style your hair??

I have a standard wet set pattern I use to create all of my hairstyles. I find that wearing my hair down is the most flattering for me, but up in the front and down in the back is also suitable. I don’t think my hair looks very good up. So my favorite way to wear it is my “Jayne Mansfield style”:

Strait on the top/crown with fluffy curls framing the face and at the bottom, with major backcombing in the “bang” area, or my “Betty Grable style”:

Big victory rolls in front with soft fluffy curls in the back, with a cute little bow, or my “Wilde Twins style”:

Soft curls in the back, with the “bangs” in a teased swoop up from the face and back into a curl, with the sides up in combs.
